Greetings Olson Families & Community!

What another wonderful week we all shared! here are some highlights:
On Monday, we kicked things off with a community safety visit from Officer Moore, offering grade-level appropriate lessons from Community Safety to eBike Safety. On Tuesday, we had a full day of IEP meetings in which our team partnered with families to develop robust plans of support for our students. Midweek brought powerful staff learning with meaningful takeaways around strong first instruction. Our 3rd graders enjoyed their first field trip of the year to PG's Natural History Museum. Our amazing PTA met on Thursday evening to plan for upcoming events including Fall Festival, Book Fair, and Penguin Patch. Friday assemblies provided students an opportunity to share what they are learning and loving about school, and we wrapped up the week with our first PBIS experience. The Bubble Party was epic and students had soooo much fun! Our Fall offerings of clubs continued this week, too, with students engaged in choir, reading, Kodely, Good News, art, improv theater, strings, multiplication, and soccer. Here's to another amazing week ahead. Enjoy The Weekly Splash video below that highlights these amazing events and more! Never hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns. Olson Orcas led the way!

September is Attendance Awareness Month

Every school day matters! September is Attendance Awareness Month, a reminder that being at school each day and on time helps students stay connected, keep pace with learning, build confidence, and develop habits for success. At MPUSD and Olson, each day counts and every person matters. We also know challenges can sometimes make getting to school difficult. Please reach out to your child's teacher and Ms. Donna in the front office if your child is ill. We are here to support!

Fall Clubs

At Olson, we value diversity in lived experience and are excited to support this by providing a variety of after school experiences for this upcoming Fall season. We believe these experiences will improve school attendance, foster agency, develop student sense of culture & identity, and improve children's overall social & emotional well-being.

Parent Square messages were sent out to families to confirm student enrollment in the various club offerings. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to the front office.

This week’s clubs:
Monday - Choir (15) & Orca Reading Reef (11)
Tuesday - Improv Theater (15)
Wednesday - Kodely (20) & Good News (22)
Thursday - Primary Art (13), Strings (15), & Advanced Strings (15)
Friday - Intermediate Art (5) &  Soccer (Field)

Grow Together with Parenting Classes

Parenting comes with plenty of joys and plenty of challenges! Monterey Adult School offers parenting classes designed to give parents and caregivers practical tools, support and opportunities to learn and grow alongside their children. From Play & Learn classes for families with young children to courses focused on positive discipline, emotional resilience, family communication, healthy routines and supporting student success, there is something for families at every stage. Classes are offered in English and Spanish, with both daytime and evening options available.

Attendance Update

Olson's Daily Attendance Goal is 97%
The chart below displays the percentage of students in each grade level who attended school each day. (-1 (TK) through 6th grade) Our 2nd & 5th grade cohorts had the strongest overall attendance for August and continue to show up this month. 3rd grade has shown an increase in attendance so far in September. Keep it up! Do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns regarding your child(ren)'s attendance. We are here to support!

National Literacy Month

September is National Literacy Month, a time to celebrate the importance of reading, writing and literacy in helping students learn, grow and thrive. Across MPUSD, our educators work every day to build strong literacy skills and foster a love of reading at every grade level. Families can be part of the celebration, too, by reading together, talking about books, visiting the library or simply encouraging students to make reading part of their daily routine. Every story begins with a page and every page can open a new possibility.

Please enjoy the video below highlighting Literacy in Action with our very own amazing teacher, Mr. McCray!

Free Food for MPUSD Families

We are excited to share chef-prepared, take-home meals for MPUSD families. Visit one of four school sites on various days, including Central Coast High School, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School, Ord Terrace Elementary, and Seaside High School.
