Greetings Olson Families & Community!

What a wonderful and busy week we all shared! We kicked it off with Early Learning Assistant (ELA) interviews on Monday. As a result, Bethany Reyes, current EDMO Asst. Program Manager, will be joining Ms. Ramirez in TK following October Break! Everyone looked spectacular for Picture Day on Monday, too. In case your child missed it, retakes will take place on November 16th. Teacher goal setting meetings wrapped up on Tuesday, and I am inspired by the thoughtful and purposeful goals that were set and am looking forward to seeing how these goals play out in classrooms throughout the year. Teachers also visited each other's classrooms throughout the week, observing for Grade Level, Engaging, Affirming, and Meaningful (GLEAM) instruction. Wednesday’s Save the Whales presentation for our 5th and 6th grade classes was epic, with Dee Dee the Beautiful Whale making her first appearance ever at Olson! Our 4th grade classes along with Mr. Schreiber went to the Symphony on Thursday for their first field trip of the year, and Ms. Odige’s 2nd grade class took a walking field trip to the Marina Public Library on Friday. We finished off the week strong during our Friday Morning Community Meetings with Ms. Choate sharing an important message about Hispanic Heritage Month. Wishing everyone a wonderful week ahead. Do not hesitate to reach out with any questions, needs, or concerns that arise throughout the week. I am here to support.

September is Attendance Awareness Month

Every school day matters! September is Attendance Awareness Month, a reminder that being at school each day and on time helps students stay connected, keep pace with learning, build confidence, and develop habits for success. At MPUSD and Olson, each day counts and every person matters. We also know challenges can sometimes make getting to school difficult. Please reach out to your child's teacher and Ms. Donna in the front office if your child is ill. We are here to support!

Fall Clubs

At Olson, we value diversity in lived experience and are excited to support this by providing a variety of after school experiences for this upcoming Fall season. We believe these experiences will improve school attendance, foster agency, develop student sense of culture & identity, and improve children's overall social & emotional well-being.

Parent Square messages were sent out to families to confirm student enrollment in the various club offerings. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to the front office.

This week’s clubs:
Monday - Choir (15), Creative Wellness (3), & Orca Reading Reef (11)
Tuesday - Improv Theater (15)
Wednesday - Kodely (20) & Good News (22)
Thursday - Primary Art (13), Strings (15), & Advanced Strings (15)
Friday - Intermediate Art (5) &  Soccer (Field)

Grow Together with Parenting Classes

Parenting comes with plenty of joys and plenty of challenges! Monterey Adult School offers parenting classes designed to give parents and caregivers practical tools, support and opportunities to learn and grow alongside their children. From Play & Learn classes for families with young children to courses focused on positive discipline, emotional resilience, family communication, healthy routines and supporting student success, there is something for families at every stage. Classes are offered in English and Spanish, with both daytime and evening options available.

Attendance Update

Olson's Daily Attendance Goal is 97%

The chart below displays the percentage of students in each grade level who attended school each day. (-1 (TK) through 6th grade) Our 2nd & 5th grade cohorts had the strongest overall attendance for August and continue to show up this month. 3rd grade has shown an increase in attendance so far in September. Keep it up! Do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns regarding your child(ren)'s attendance. We are here to support!

National Literacy Month

September is National Literacy Month, a time to celebrate the importance of reading, writing and literacy in helping students learn, grow and thrive. Across MPUSD, our educators work every day to build strong literacy skills and foster a love of reading at every grade level. Families can be part of the celebration, too, by reading together, talking about books, visiting the library or simply encouraging students to make reading part of their daily routine. Every story begins with a page and every page can open a new possibility.

Please enjoy the video below highlighting Literacy in Action with our very own amazing teacher, Mr. McCray!

Free Food for MPUSD Families

We are excited to share chef-prepared, take-home meals for MPUSD families. Visit one of four school sites on various days, including Central Coast High School, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School, Ord Terrace Elementary, and Seaside High School.
